Byron Aceman's contributions to cancer care and research are not only considerable, they are also creative and varied. Byron participates in fundraisers, donates in the name of friends and has arranged a gift to the BC Cancer Foundation in his will. The other way Byron has chosen to donate is through a gift of stock.
Many more-established donors as well as younger people who have benefited from the high-tech economy, hold shares that have significantly appreciated in value. If these shares are sold, they are subject to significant capital gains tax. If the shares go straight to a charity like the BC Cancer Foundation, their entire value goes to the charity and the donor does not need to pay any capital gains tax. His own experience as a cancer survivor made Byron take stock of what's important. Now he's chosen to give stock to help fight cancer.
