Many donors to the BC Cancer Foundation have personal stories about experiences with cancer — either their own or their friends and loved ones. But Frank Garnett, on his 80th birthday, was inspired to give to the Foundation because he and his wife and their sprawling family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, enjoy good health. Cancer was a hurdle that they had not been asked to face and for that he was grateful enough to make a gift of stock. In our 2006 Annual Report to Donors, Frank said "You don't have to be touched by cancer yourself to say 'thank you'." Compassion, gratefulness, and selflessness were at the heart of Frank's donation. The fact that his gift didn't deplete his post-retirement bank account and offered tax advantages, were lesser incentives, but it helped Frank give more than he might otherwise have been able to.
